Recent updates had website owners and developers scrambling as some very trusted plugins reacted badly to the WordPress core update version 6.4. Version 6.4.1 was out within 48 hours, if that’s any indication.
One of the plugins affected was the Stripe payments extension to WooCommerce – one of the most venerable ecommerce platforms around, and developed in-house at WordPress’ parent organisation, Automattic. That this was embarassing seems self-evident.
But so it goes with open source software. We all gain the benefits of software that would cost a fortune if it relied on proprietary companies. And I have to say I was impressed with the speed of turnaround with the emergency fix… though I could have done without combing through turning plugins on and off until I could identify the culprit!
Everything seems to be back to stable for now, and customers can breathe easy again. But always remember – setup your backup schedule and make sure you’ve got a handy web developer who can help you when things turn out less than in your favour.
